Silk Types

Mulberry Silk

Mulberry silk comes from the silkworm, Bombyxmori L moth.

Mulberry Silk is also known as cultivated silk and bombvx silk but mulberry silk is the most commonly used term. Mulberry silk comes from the silkworm, Bombyxmori L moth, which solely feeds on the leaves of mulberry plant. The moth has one job to do and that is to lay eggs. After it lays about 500 eggs, its job is finished and it dies. The tiny pinpoint size eggs are kept at 65 degree Fahrenheit with the temperature slowly and care fully raised to 75 degree Fahrenheit to hatch the eggs.

The tiny silkworm that are born are fed an exclusive diet of mulberry leaves 24 hrs a day, 7days a week (mulberry leaves are the only food the bombvxmori moth eats). After about a month of the constant gorging on the mulberry leaves, the silkworms will have increased their weight about 10,000 times and will have built up enough energy to start spinning their cocoon. The cocoons are then kept in a warm place for several days. Great care is taken to ensure the silkworm do not hatch into moths because that would damage the cocoon and break the silk filament it has woven. To harvest the silk from the cocoons, they are place in water to soften the filament. The softened filament is then unwound from the cocoon. One filament can be up to 1600 yards long. Learn More →

China produces only Temperate Tassar silk while India has got distinction in producing both tropical and temperate varieties. India is the only country where Tropical Tassar silk is produced.

Mostly tribal people are engaged in the production of Tassar cocoons, which are used, as raw material for production of silk. Out of the total tribal population of about 38 million nearly 30 million (77%)are located in Tasar cultivating states of tropical (25.67 million) and temperate (4.23million) belt. However, 13.2 and 1.32 lakh tribals are engaged in Tassar silkworm rearing in tropical zone. Almost an equal number is engaged in reeling, spinning and processing of Tassar cocoons and silk out of the total available forest area of 445.25 ha. It is copper color, coarse silk mainly used for furnishings and interiors. It is less lustrous than mulberry silk, but has its own feel and appeal. Eri Silk - The name Eri is derived from the Assamese word 'ERA', which means castor-oil, the plant on which the Eri silkworm mostly feeds. It is obtained from semi-domesticated multi voltine silkworm, Antheraea assamensis. These silkworms feed on the aromatic leaves of Som and Soalu plants and are reared on trees similar to that of Tasar. This golden yellow color silk is the second largest variety of silk being produced in India and quantity wise, it is next to mulberry silk and is approximately 7 - 8% of mulberry production. It is mostly reared in north eastern part of India like Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Traditionally Eri silk used to be reared in wild and hence known as wild silk which is a non-continuous silk by nature Eri silk is always identified as Assam silk.

Eri silk is a protein fibre. The fineness range of this fibre is between 14 to 16 u. It is not a continuous filament and is to be spun into a yarn.
